Featured Learner - Rebecca Reedy
Rebecca Reedy earned her associate degree in Business Administration nearly 17 years ago. Upon receiving her degree, she made the decision to focus on her family and raising her twins, with the thought of returning to school for her bachelor's degree in a year or two. It wasn't until 13 years later that Becky returned to school to earn her bachelor's degree. Her goal upon commencing her studies was to receive her degree within two years of starting Peirce's Paralegal Studies program, and she is just a few weeks away from achieving that goal.
Becky was hesitant to return to college - she thought she was too old or would not be able to handle the course load. Instead, she adds, "Was I wrong! The classes at Peirce are challenging yet manageable. The professors know what future employers are looking for and what is necessary for us to land that ideal job." Becky states that she is more dedicated as an older student. She is very disciplined and takes her schoolwork seriously because she wants to get the most out of the program.
"I had worked in law firms for over 15 years as a legal secretary," says Becky. However, in her current position with the State of New Jersey, she cannot be employed as a Paralegal without a bachelor's degree. "What I liked most about Peirce is that the Paralegal Studies program is ABA-approved and the campus is located within 30 minutes of my home," Becky says. "This gave me the option of being an on campus or online student."
Becky is a master of time management and credits that skill as key to maintaining her high G.P.A. and managing her life outside of school. She says fellow students are a great support system, too. She points out that she was able to network with other students who are dealing with similar daily challenges, such as time restraints, working full-time, and raising children.
Edwin Miller, Esq., Faculty Chair and Professor, Paralegal Studies, states "I have seen the level of focus, commitment, and dedication she brings to her degree pursuit and, I think she truly does exemplify the gold standard in terms of being a Peirce representative."
"Fellow students can achieve their goals if they stay focused on the ultimate goal - graduation - even when balancing family and work," she says. "I have learned to manage my time so that, although school is a priority, I make time for myself. The important thing to remember is that balance is a valuable key to success."
"Through this experience, I have learned to believe in myself. I want to be a good role model for my children, to show them that if you set your mind to something, anything is possible. If you have self-motivation and compassion for others, you will succeed."
