Featured Learner - Sylvia Bias

Sylvia Bias

Self-determination is important to Sylvia Bias. Next June, when she receives her degree, she will have achieved the first of the goals she set for herself in 2005.

"My first goal was to become a college student and earn an associate degree to improve myself and to move up the ladder in my job," Sylvia said. "I was determined to succeed and had promised myself that I would not allow anyone else to dictate how my life would be. I wanted personal motivation in my life."

For Sylvia, the degree from Peirce is not only about reaching an important individual goal, it is also about being a positive role model for her daughter. "I am a single parent, and while I am working toward my own goals I am encouraging my daughter to reach hers, too. I want her to stay focused and obtain a college education."

Sylvia is studying Business Administration with a concentration in Management. She says the program at Peirce fits well with her schedule. "Peirce provides me the convenience of getting my degree in a shorter time by offering me an accelerated program through classes that meet in clusters in my neighborhood once a week in the evening. That is very important to me." Sylvia's closest friend is also attending the same cluster.

Gina January, Enrollment Representative at Peirce, said, "Sylvia has maintained a solid B average and has been an inspiration to her fellow learners, even attending classes after she had knee surgery. She has also been a good point person for many of her fellow students, providing encouragement, as well as information about programs on campus and scholarship programs."

Sylvia's advice to all students is to continue to pursue their goals, stay positive and strong. "Peirce has offered me the chance to see just who I am and what I can do," she said. "In June 2008, I will be walking down the aisle with my fellow classmates. Hooray for me!"
