This interactive workshop will examine the impact of social media on employment law issues. Social media is often used by employers in making recruitment, hiring, and termination decisions. Moreover, social media is used by job seekers to network, establish contacts, and locate job openings. In this context, we will explore case law, the National Labor Relations Board, Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Age Discrimination Act, Genetic Information Nondiscrimination law, and Executive Order 11246. We will discuss the potential legal liabilities for employers and employee permissible use and misuse of social media. Finally we will review the use of social media in litigation.
Learning Objective:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of:

  • Current trends and conflicts in the law as relates to social media
  • Appropriate usage; social networking
  • Realistic policy: location-based social media

This workshop will cover the basics of eDiscovery and address many of the common legal, technical, and practical issues faced by paralegals including procedures for document retention, gathering and production; current federal and state rules on Electronically Stored Information (ESI); drafting and responding to eDiscovery, and the consequences of intentional or accidental spoliation of electronically stored evidence.
Learning Objective:
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of:

  • The definition and scope of eDiscovery
  • Common legal and technical issues associated with the retention, gathering, and production of ESI
  • Strategies for maximizing the effectiveness of eDiscovery documents and response in common litigation situations

This workshop will introduce the three common types of Intellectual Property (IP) law: Patent, Trademark, and Copyright and address the unique rewards and challenges to the IP paralegal. In addition, we will explore the basics of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) web site, as well as the recent passing of the "America Invents Act."
Learning Objective:
This seminar intends to provide participants with a greater understanding of:

  • Patent, Trademark, and Copyright terminology and influences in law
  • The general responsibilities of an IP paralegal
  • The USPTO web site
  • The purpose of the America Invents Ac t- time permitting
