Peirce College's General Studies Degree for Career Advancement or Broad Educational Experience

Philadelphia, PA - October 6, 2011 - Peirce College has introduced an Associate Degree in General Studies. The program prepares students for a variety of entry-level career positions and serves as a foundation and important stepping stone for bachelor's degree completion in most fields of study.

The degree is ideal for many students, including those who are undecided on their area of study and/or career path, as well as military and law enforcement personnel who want to gain promotion opportunities by furthering their education.

"For those who never went back to school, the program gives students the most flexible option to earn their associate degree, as well as a platform to select the most appropriate major for their bachelor's degree," said Brian Finnegan, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean, Information Technology and General Education for Peirce College. "It is an opportunity for students to maximize transfer of their general education credits from previous studies and leverage that toward earning a bachelor's degree."

Peirce's General Studies curriculum covers a wide range of courses including humanities, history, arts, English, social sciences, mathematics and technology. It allows for a well-rounded education in oral and written communication skills, critical thinking and analytical skills, and is applicable to all job types. Students can customize their degree to fit personal and professional interests through a large number of electives. Online and on-campus study formats are available through accelerated seven-week classes.

Peirce created the General Studies degree program especially for the School District of Philadelphia's Parent University. The program was introduced in 2010, when twenty-five adult students-parents of Philadelphia schoolchildren-took their first steps to their Associate in Arts degrees. Peirce's program responds to parents' education needs by increasing access to college education and advancing their skills, knowledge and resources.

"Peirce understands working adults who want to get a degree. Whether they need the degree to get ahead at work, move in a new career direction or are seeking personal fulfillment, Peirce can help them achieve their goals, through the College's supportive environment," Finnegan said.
