Peirce College Expands Partnership With Independence Blue Cross to Encourage Workforce Development

PHILADELPHIA, March 18, 2016 – Peirce College, Philadelphia’s leading college for adult learners, has been named a university partner of Independence Blue Cross, an agreement that supports Mayor Jim Kenney’s call for Philadelphia’s business and academic communities to work together to fulfill the city’s workforce development needs.

Under the new partnership, an expansion of the relationship between Peirce and Independence that dates back more than 15 years, Independence will offer its associates the opportunity to pursue a Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership & Management (MSOLM) through a tuition deferral program.

“Independence’s partnership with Peirce College is one of the ways we can help associates pursue their personal and career goals, strengthen their talents and foster the next generation of leaders,” said Independence SVP and Chief HR Officer Jeanie Heffernan.

“This masters program specializes in helping students become more effective leaders, with the intention of providing our regional economy with a new generation of businesspeople skilled in organizational change, consultation, leadership and management,” said Vice President of Academic Advancement Rita Toliver-Roberts, Ed.D.

With Peirce Fit, Peirce’s new course delivery model that allows students to choose on a week-to-week basis whether to attend class on campus or online, Independence associates who enroll in the program will have the flexibility they need to complete their degree while balancing their careers.

Independence has been a corporate partner of Peirce since 2001, which means that its associates, as well as their spouses and dependents, are also eligible for a 25 percent tuition discount in any of Peirce’s undergraduate programs.

This partnership was developed in coordination with Peirce College’s strategic plan to increase and improve partnerships with regional employers. A leader in adult education in Philadelphia for more than 150 years, Peirce is committed to growing the regional economy through career-based training and partnerships with area employers. Independence associates can begin taking classes through the University Partner program.

“This expansion of our partnership with Independence will serve to prepare more Philadelphians than ever for leadership roles in today’s healthcare industry,” Toliver-Roberts said.
