Peirce College’s Newly Accredited Healthcare Program Keeps Pace with Industry’s Growth in Philadelphia

Health Information Administration program only the second in Philadelphia to be accredited by CAHIIM

PHILADELPHIA, February 21, 2017 — As healthcare continues to add jobs faster than any other industry in Philadelphia, Peirce College has further strengthened its workforce-relevant healthcare portfolio to ensure that healthcare employers in the region can fill these positions with qualified candidates.

Most recently, Peirce’s Health Information Administration program became only the second baccalaureate program to earn accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) in the Philadelphia region. This milestone makes Peirce students eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam, an industry certification highly valued by regional employers.

“This accreditation will uniquely position our graduates when they are looking for jobs,” said Healthcare Faculty Chair Stephanie Donovan. “Because they can earn this credential, Peirce healthcare graduates will stand out from the crowd and employers can be confident that they have the skills and knowledge to hit the ground running on day one.”

The CAHIIM accreditation comes in the wake of Peirce welcoming its first cohort of graduate students to its new Master’s of Science in Healthcare Administration this fall, a program developed in collaboration with local employers to equip students with relevant healthcare leadership and management skills identified by organizations throughout the region. The College has offered a bachelor’s program in healthcare administration since 2010 and has seen significant enrollment growth. In the past four years alone, the number of students studying health care at Peirce has grown by nearly 12 percent.

Philadelphia has consistently been ranked at or near the top of the best American cities for health care professionals. Adobo recently released a study that said local health care jobs increased by 9.89 percent from 2012-2015. According to their calculations, health care accounts for 78.1 out of every 1,000 jobs in Philadelphia.

With a mission aligned with workforce development in Philadelphia, Peirce has also invested in hiring additional faculty with specialized, hands-on experience in all aspects of healthcare, to equip students to fully leverage career opportunities in the healthcare industry.

“Because Peirce is a career-focused school, we hire industry practitioners so students can learn the hands on skills that will make them successful,” said Donovan. “Highly skilled workers are essential for this field and we are committed to growing our program and ensuring our curricula remain at the vanguard of change in the industry, particularly in the Philadelphia region."

The newest additions to the health care faculty are:

Todd Nickelsberg, M.S.
Assistant Professor, Undergraduate Health Programs

Nickelsberg brings real-world experience to Peirce’s students from his role as a behavioral health consultant with the Philadelphia Department of Health and several years of healthcare faculty leadership positions at other higher education institutions. Nickelsberg earned his master’s degree in Health Administration with a concentration in Health Informatics from Saint Joseph’s University and his Bachelor of Science degree in Paralegal Studies from Peirce College.

Jacqueline Penrod, J.D.
Associate Professor, Undergraduate Health Programs

The former Senior Legal Counsel at AmeriHealth Mercy, Penrod provided legal counsel with respect to provider network development, member enrollment and regulatory compliance. She also has experience in the acute care setting and previously held positions at Abington Memorial Hospital, CHOP and Temple University School of Medicine. Her research has focused on health privacy, law, compliance and medical informatics. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Temple University’s James E. Beasley School of Law.

DeVida Rembert, D.H.A.
Associate Professor, Graduate Healthcare Administration

With both a master’s degree and terminal degree in Healthcare Administration, Rembert will lead the development and teaching of courses within the new Master's of Science in Healthcare Administration program. A former Peirce adjunct faculty member, she brings a breadth of both academic and business experience, having held a variety of leadership positions in healthcare.
