Parent University: Year 2

Parent University: Year 2

Many people credit their parents with teaching them how important it is to earn a college degree. That’s exactly what the moms and dads enrolled in Peirce’s Parent University are doing — showing their children that they understand the value of education, and pursuing degrees that will help them go further in their careers.

On September 13, 2011, the School District of Philadelphia’s Parent University kicked off its second year of classes from the Peirce campus. The program assists parents in supporting their children to achieve academic success, while providing opportunities and support for parents to achieve their own personal academic and non-academic goals. Peirce offers its General Studies degree program to support Parent U.

Peirce President James Mergiotti and Dr. Leroy D. Nunery II, Acting Superintendent for the School District of Philadelphia, were on hand to welcome the students back and wish them well as they embark on the next stage of the program.

Peirce’s focus on teaching working adult learners made us the right match for the Parent University program. Our faculty, staff, and support services set students up for academic success and position them to pursue a bachelor’s degree and improve their futures. Parent University students Kimberly Fowley and Ernestine Bristow weighed in on the importance of the program.

The Peirce partnership with Parent University is part of the College’s commitment to the City of Philadelphia’s education initiative to increase the number of residents attaining college degrees. In line with that mission, Philadelphia radio station 900 AM WURD came out to do a live broadcast from the Peirce campus.

They interviewed several members of the Peirce staff, faculty, and Parent University students to talk about the importance of lifelong learning, a commitment shared by Peirce, the Mayor’s Office of Education, and WURD. It was a busy and exciting evening on campus! Check out photos of the evening’s events by clicking play on the slideshow below:
