Talent Greater Philly honors Peirce College’s commitment to higher education in Philadelphia
This morning, Peirce College is very honored to be recognized by Talent Greater Philly as a 2014 Regional Challenge Honoree. The organization has given us its Innovative Practice in Higher Education Honor to mark Peirce’s partnership with Year Up, as well as our overall mission to provide career-focused education that builds the local talent pipeline.
Talent Greater Philly announced the honorees at the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s State of Education: The Power of Partnerships event in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Representatives from the College are attending the event with fellow Regional Challenge Honorees who are also making strides to improve college access, persistence, and completion. The Regional Challenge, now in its second year, was created by Talent Greater Philly to showcase the work of local businesses and higher education institutions dedicated to the educational advancement of Greater Philadelphia’s residents.
“We all know that college education is a critical issue for our region’s competitiveness. The Regional Challenge Honorees are models for other businesses and institutions in our region who are also motivated to invest in an educated workforce,” said Deborah Diamond, President of Campus Philly and member of Talent Greater Philly’s Steering Committee.
Talent Greater Philly was formed in 2010 to amplify the efforts of the region’s educational support partners. The Talent Greater Philly Steering Committee is comprised of Campus Philly, CEO Council for Growth, Economy League of Greater Philadelphia, and Graduate! Network.
Peirce and Year Up joined forces in fall 2013 to bring Year Up’s Professional Training Corps (PTC) program to Philadelphia. The Year Up is a non-profit organization that helps young adults in urban centers ascend to a fulfilling career pathway in one year.
The Year Up and Peirce partnership allows students to enroll in courses and earn college credits as they complete the year-long intensive training program. Students spend the first six months learning hard and soft skills and Peirce coursework during the Learning and Development phase. They spend the second six months working 35 hours per week interning with corporate partners with the aim of securing full-time employment at the end of the term while also earning their college degree.
The Year Up Philadelphia PTC program has doubled in size in just a year, and is not showing any signs of slowing down. The partnership continues to innovate and develop new programs based on client needs and workforce trends.
We’re excited to share more good news about Peirce’s partnership with Year Up as we continue working together. Talent Greater Philly’s honor recognizes that Philadelphia’s young people can succeed with the right opportunities and educational support.
