Journey To Commencement: Elizabeth D. Reevey

Peirce College’s 160th Commencement is right around the corner! We are thrilled to highlight some of our upcoming graduates and share their stories, in their own words, with our Journey to Commencement series.

Today’s feature is Elizabeth D. Reevey, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program.

“A goal delayed is not denied. That was my mantra to keep myself motivated to complete my goal no matter how long or difficult this journey may seem. I remember going to a technical school in the late 1980’s and an instructor said to me; I should go to college. I received an Associates in specialized business but lacked confidence at that time to go to college. In the late 1990’s I attended Community College. I did not obtain my associate’s degree in business administration because of family obligations. I had a full-time job and four children, with no support system, my priority in raising my family caused me to place my dream on hold.

In October 2022 I decided, I waited long enough, and it was time to prioritize my dreams. My children were adults with children of their own, if not now when? The college I was attending was slowing converting to complete on-line learning which was not for me. I enjoyed the convenience of virtual classrooms because I loved the interaction with the professors and classmates. It was then I decided to leave that college, and Peirce was the college I wanted to attend. My reason goes back to the 1990’s when Peirce was a Junior College. I always wanted to attend Peirce, but CCP was a more convenient commute at that time.

I contacted admissions, and I was able to transfer all my credits, including Community College, which was a pleasant surprise. They made the transition seem effortless. My advisor Ellen Massey, words cannot express how much I appreciate her patience with me each semester!  She was always there to assist me and to follow up to ensure I was registered on time and explained each step thoroughly with me.

The greatest challenge for me was time management. I am a project manager, and I supervise the real estate associates and administrative assistant for a non-profit organization in the real estate division. For almost a year, I have been without real estate associates, therefore, I have been wearing many hats which leave me mentally exhausted most days. This is why I appreciate Peirce so much. The virtual classroom allows me to better understand the coursework, assignments and reading materials. Although the deadlines are there, I am able to complete the assignments on time, somehow, I do not feel rushed. And although there are some assignments that are submitted down to the wire, I can ask questions and get timely responses from the professors in order to make deadlines. The professors understand what we, as adult students, are going through and make themselves available to assist when we need them.

I have two classmates I can’t wait to meet in person because we have come to rely on each other for motivation when life gets overwhelming and to bounce ideas off each other.

Overall, this was the best decision I have made to attend Peirce. I have dual admission, and I will graduate in June with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and in December a Master of Science degree in Organizational Leadership and Management.

A goal delayed is not denied. Not only in 2025 will I complete my almost 30-year goal of a bachelor’s degree, but I will, by the end of the year, have a master’s degree! This is because of my wonderful advisor, excellent professors, the best supportive husband God could have given me and Peirce. I am an example to my adult children. My oldest is now enrolled in Community College with hopes to transfer to Peirce. I am working on my daughter-in-love to take classes at Peirce, and I am a living example to my eleven grandchildren. Their ages range from 22 years to 2 months with one who graduated, and one presently enrolled in Albany State University.  Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t accomplish your goals. Have dreams, set goals and timelines, work as hard as you can to make your dreams come true but if for some reason your timetable is not working out, as we learned in our classes, be flexible, readjust but never, never give up. It may be delayed but never denied. I am a living witness.

Thank you, Peirce College, for all of your support!”
