Mark your calendars: Spring 2010 workshops at the Walker Center for Academic Excellence

As promised, here is Peirce College’s Spring 2010 workshop schedule for the Walker Center for Academic Excellence. A reminder — the various workshops are hosted both on campus and online, so be sure to check the location. And did I mention — they’re all free!
The following workshops take place between Jan. 4 and Feb. 27, 2010.

ON-CAMPUS WORKSHOPS

Our on campus workshops are broken down into several categories to help you find what you are looking for.

Academic Skills


Calculator Skills for Business Statistics
Tuesday, Jan. 12 or Thursday, Jan. 21 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Room 67
Learn the various functions of a scientific calculator to assist you in becoming a successful student in your statistics class. This hands-on workshop will review calculator symbols, formula substitutions, and much more! If you are currently enrolled in MAT 109 or MAT 210, this workshop is ideal for you.

Improving Your Study Skills
Thursday, Jan. 14 (Room 69) or Monday, Feb. 1 (Room 67) – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Learn the most important and basic ideas for succeeding in school. That includes: getting organized, reading, taking notes, studying for tests, taking tests, doing research, and getting extra help.

Choosing Classes Strategically
Tuesday, Jan. 26 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Room 67
This workshop will assist with which classes are required for your degree program. Discuss any major decisions adding or dropping a course, changing your major, or deciding on what delivery format is suitable for your learning style.

Developing Adult Learners
Tuesday, Feb. 9 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Room 67
This workshop will assist you with the nature of an adult’s process of change. You will have a better understanding of yourself and your biases and assumptions, ongoing engagement with learning from experience, following through with commitments, and reaching out for mutual enhancement.

Research Skills

MLA Demystified
Thursday, Jan. 14 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Library
Master the art of in-text citations and learn how to create a list of works cited. Feel free to bring examples you are unsure about citing. This workshop is ideal for all students.

Technology Skills

PRC 101 – New Student Workshop
Tuesday, Jan. 5 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m – PC Room 27
Even if you plan to take your classes on campus, you will need to access the Internet during your academic journey at Peirce. Learn the aspects of online classes, including the course companion, navigating PRC 101, using the “Dropbox,” downloading a document from “DocSharing,” the virtual library, and much more.

SMARTHINKING Orientation
Tuesday, Jan. 12 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – PC Room 27
SMARTHINKING is an online tutoring service available for free to all Peirce students. This service currently provides tutoring in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Math, Statistics, and Writing. SMARTHINKING is available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Come to this workshop to familiarize yourself with SMARTHINKING and expand your tutoring options.

Microsoft Excel 2007
Tuesday, Feb. 2 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – PC Room 27
This workshop will teach students the basics of using Excel by working with columns and rows, inserting charts and graphs, creating multiple spreadsheets within a worksheet, copying and pasting text, and merging cells for a polished and professional spreadsheet.

Personal Development

Professional Development and Leadership Training Workshop
Saturday, Feb. 13 – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Room 69
This workshop will help access your professionalism in the workplace, accountability and credibility, making the most of your workplace mistakes, task evaluations, and team.

ONLINE WORKSHOPS

The following workshops will be offered interactively online.

Stress Management
Monday, Jan. 18 or Thursday, Feb. 11 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Online
If stress is impacting your daily life this workshop will help you learn more. Learn what stress is, how it affects our bodies and minds, what your current stress level is, and most importantly learn tools and techniques you can use to deal with stress.

Achieving Academic Success
Tuesday, Jan. 26 or Wednesday, Feb. 10 – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Online
Understanding the reality of achieving good grades through goal setting, and effective study and note-taking techniques. Leave this workshop with a concrete plan on how to succeed in your class.
