Learn how to help stop human trafficking
Currently 27 million people are held in modern-day slavery. Each year 14,000 people are trafficked into the U.S. Today, 244,000 American children and youth are at risk for child sexual exploitation.
These cold, hard facts are alarming and discerning. But they’re true. While human trafficking is alive and well in the U.S., there are steps you can take to fight back and stand up to those who victimize children.
The 2007 documentary “Very Young Girls” sheds light onto this very issue. It follows the journey of Rachel Lloyd, a former victim of sexual exploitation who has since survived her abuse, as she helps young girls in need through her non-profit, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services.
On April 1, the College will screen “Very Young Girls” at 5:30 p.m. in room 51 in College Hall. A follow-up discussion led by Dr. Ellyn Jo Waller from the Philadelphia Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will take place after the screening, outlining what you can do to help raise awareness to end human slavery.
The Links, Incorporated is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations. 12,000 professional women of color make up its 276 chapters in 41 states. These extraordinary women are committed to enriching the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. Together, they contribute more than 500,000 hours of service annually. We are excited to welcome them to the College!
