BUILD YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK: Brush up on your networking skills at CDS’ Mocktails event |
If you’re searching for a job or think you might be looking for a new one in the future, it’s always a good idea to brush up on and hone your networking skills. That’s why we created our Mocktails networking event, hosted by Career Development Services.
This annual event gives Peirce students and alumni hands-on experience in developing their networking skills. This year’s Mocktails event will take place on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in classrooms 51 and 52. All Peirce students, alumni, faculty, and staff are invited to attend. To add some real-world experience to the mix, some 20 employers from the Philadelphia region will also be in attendance.
These employers come from a variety of industries, including the paralegal field, information technology, business, and healthcare. In fact, we already have RVSPs from Independence Blue Cross Blue Shield, employees from the City of Philadelphia, recruiters from non-profit staffing firms, and more. We’ll be publishing the full list of attending employers closer to event time.
So this is how it works. Attendees come to the event professionally dressed and prepared with their elevator speech. They circulate the room, meeting and talking to fellow students, faculty and staff members, and area employers, all while sipping our famous, non-alcoholic Peircetini.
At the end of each individual meet and greet, employers or faculty members give the student or alum feedback on their handshake, professionalism, demeanor, and topic choice for the conversation on a business card. The feedback will point out both good things you’ve done, as well as things you need to work on. Remember, these are not criticisms, just advice to help you improve how you come across in a professional situation.
If you rank exceptionally across the board, the employer or faculty member will hand you a “Good Networking Golden Ticket.” Hold onto those, because the attendee with the most golden tickets at the end of the evening earns bragging rights and a $25 American Express gift card. There will also be an employer panel near the end of the evening, where the employers will give all the attendees candid professional feedback as a group.
The ability to network well is a skill you’ll use throughout your career. It’ll help you keep up with industry trends and information while in your current position. And if you’re looking for new career opportunities, many jobs are secured through networking opportunities. You might be surprised to see how your contacts can connect you to a positive new job during your career.
For an extra boost, we’ve also scheduled three pre-meetings in advance of our Mocktails event to help you prep your elevator speech, practice talking to new people, and guide you in picking out appropriate, professional attire. They’re scheduled in room 69 for:
- Nov. 29 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Nov. 29 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- Nov. 30 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you at our pre-meetings and Mocktails event! There’s no need to RSVP to our pre-meetings. If you plan on attending our Mocktails event, please RVSP to CDS@Peirce.edu or 215.670.9202 by Dec. 2. If you can’t make it, we’ll be posting networking tips and tricks attendees picked up during the event here on the blog.
We also have many more events and workshops coming in January when Session 3 starts. Look forward to our Virtual Resumania, taking place from Jan. 14 to Jan. 18, where you’ll receive expert feedback (via email) from career counselors on your resume. We’ll also have a resume and interview boot camp on Feb. 1, where employers will do speed reviews with attendees to give them tips on their interviewing skills and resume.
