Is that your mom with a backpack? Studies show adult learners are taking over the classroom
It’s true, your mom really is going to college, and so are plenty of other moms, dads, and even grandparents. It’s a fact that the number of older college students is rising, and these adult learners might be on to something.
This recent Huffington Post article is a great examination of the growing number of nontraditional students, and why their peers are following in their footsteps.
Nontraditional-aged students are returning to college classrooms for many reasons, both personal and professional. Some are looking to change careers, get an advanced degree, or learn new skills to keep up with a fast-changing world. Others might have been sidetracked from their degree program years ago, and are finally returning to finish the job.
The article reveals some interesting factors contributing to the trend. New delivery methods, like online or distance learning, are making it easier for older students to go back to college. Older students are increasingly seen as assets who bring unique experience, focus, and maturity to their pursuit of education.
It’s a great read that speaks to what we preach every day — that it’s never too late to earn your degree. To others who are considering going back to school later in life, the droves of working adult learners returning to the classroom prove that you can do this.
