Healthcare students: Join this association – stat!
One of our core educational beliefs is that students should participate in real-world experiences to help hone their skills and better understand how classroom teachings apply to their careers. For students in our health programs — Health Information Technology, Health Information Administration, and Healthcare Administration — our Health Programs Student Association is an important way we expose our students to these experiences.
Students who enroll in one of our Health Programs become immediate members of the Health Programs Student Association. The association meets monthly, on campus and at local healthcare-related organizations, and gives students context to what they’re learning from their instructors. Our latest meeting took place on Oct. 11 at Pennsylvania Hospital, the oldest hospital in the nation.
16 students and two faculty members (myself included) participated in a historic tour of the hospital, which was led by Stacey Peeples, the organization’s archivist. The students who attended told us how much they enjoyed exploring the history of medicine and seeing how it shaped the delivery of care in our nation today.
After the tour, we continued our discussion in the classroom and focused on how quality standards, first established 300 years ago, shape the patient care guidelines currently in use today. Here are some photos from our tour which capture some of the rich historical items we saw.
This is just one of the many activities we plan through our Health Programs Student Association. We often invite guest lecturers to our meetings, and focus on having discussions about health care and its place in our nation today.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in room 69. Be sure to check your Peirce.edu email for additional information on the topic for the next meeting.
We’re also looking forward to some exciting spring events. On April 2, 2013, the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) will be visiting Peirce College to provide a free, two-part training course to teach about a career as a cancer registrar and the basics of cancer data collection. There’s a strong demand for cancer registrars in the region. The need for comprehensive cancer data has expanded employment opportunities for the cancer registrar to include every level of the cancer surveillance community. The two-part training will introduce the basics of cancer registry, as well as tell you how you can become a Certified Tumor Registrar.
We’ll also be hosting a networking meeting in April, sponsored by the Peirce College Alumni Association. Peirce alumni who work in healthcare in the Philadelphia region will be in attendance to speak to current students about how they secured their current positions, as well as share advice and network. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in room 69. If you’re an alum interested in attending this event, please let me know!
