Veteran’s Day is a special day for the Peirce community as many of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni are veterans or current members of the military. So we’re really passionate about thanking them for their service and providing them with opportunities for transition into civilian life. One of the ways we do that is by hosting an annual brunch on Veteran’s Day with students, faculty, and staff in College Hall. Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) annually supports and attends this event.
Peirce military students and members of the VUB program came together for this year’s brunch on Monday. Peirce student Diana Kirkland spoke about her experience transitioning back into the academic world, and Peirce faculty member Marguerite Pannell spoke about her journey from the Navy to student, and then from student to faculty member.
The event also provided students from both programs with the opportunity to network and share experiences. Check out our pictures from the event.
We believe education is a vital step for military members in their transition to civilian life. Most military members have been out of the private job market for years, so a college education can play a crucial role in helping them find their footing in the workforce. Getting a college degree after serving also helps military members hone the skills and experiences they gained while in the armed services and apply them to civilian jobs.
Providing this educational support to military members is an important part of our institution’s history. Peirce was founded in 1865 after the Civil War to help members of the military transition into the job market. Since then, we’ve always commended and honored our service members for their contribution to our country by providing several other benefits to enable them to pursue their education both during and after service.
One of the biggest benefits we offer is our Protect and Serve Grant, a special tuition-based scholarship designed specifically to fit the busy, mobile lifestyle of military members and their families.
The grant reduces tuition by up to 25 percent, either online or on campus. Active members and veterans of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Reserves, National Guard, Police or Firefighters, and Corrections are eligible, as well as EMT personnel. Spouses and dependents are also automatically qualified for the Protect and Serve Grant. To apply, service members need to show proof of an honorable discharge.

Earning your degree during or after serving in the armed forces might seem overwhelming, but it’s possible. The military students we’ve featured on our blog are proof of this, as well as the career advancement you can achieve as a result.
