A Mother, Full-time Conductor, and Current Liberal Studies Student: Meet Erin Joseph

A Mother, Full-time Conductor, and Current Liberal Studies Student: Meet Erin Joseph

After graduating from high school, Erin Joseph began attending college. However, she soon pivoted to a career in cosmetology to provide for her son. Over the next 17 years, she continued to take college courses but never had the opportunity to finish her degree due to the responsibilities of being an entrepreneur and providing for her son.

In February 2018, she transitioned out of the beauty industry to become a flight attendant with JetBlue Airways – a job she held until the end of 2022.

During her time as a flight attendant, Erin kept her dream of earning a college degree alive through the JetBlue Scholars program – an innovative new model for how employers can help their people succeed. JetBlue Scholars partners with online course providers and institutions of higher learning – like Peirce – to make earning a degree simpler and more affordable than ever.

In the spring of 2022, Erin started her educational journey at Peirce by enrolling in the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Cybersecurity. Peirce was a great fit because of the variety of program offerings and the ability to maximize the number of credits transferred.

“Transferring credits was effortless, and that is why I chose Peirce,” she said. “Peirce accepted most of my credits, which reduced the amount of classes I needed to graduate.”

Peirce’s Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies is one of the most transfer-friendly programs available. With the ability to transfer in up to 102 credits, students like Erin can utilize all of the credits they earned through previous college courses, work experience, military training, and more.

Within Peirce’s Liberal Arts program, students can choose different concentrations based on their interests and job prospects. Erin chose Cybersecurity as her concentration because she wanted to pursue something new in a growing field that provides a healthy work-life balance. As a mother, Erin wants to work in a field that allows the opportunity to spend more time with her children and to work from home. Her ultimate goal? To be a positive role model for her children in whatever she does.

“I want to show my kids that no matter what stage of life they are in, anything is possible if it is something they want,” Erin said.

As a full-time employee and mother, Erin has faced many challenges while completing her degree. She manages all her responsibilities by carefully planning out time to complete her coursework.

“I have more distractions and less time, so I have to be mindful of time management and focus on maintaining a healthy balance between work, family, and school”, she said.

Erin describes her experience at Peirce as positive and supportive. “My overall experience has been great, especially with the staff. Devon Vargason, my advisor, made sure my journey at Peirce was effortless and created a clear path on how to make the most of my experience and time.”

Currently, Erin is working as a conductor for a Class 1 railroad company. Once she has completed her bachelor’s degree, she plans to transition into a management position within Cybersecurity focusing on supply chain logistics.

And for all her fellow Peirce students and the working adults considering going back to school, Erin has some advice, “If you are considering going back, JUST DO IT. Even if you have not made a concrete plan, start taking classes and figure out what you like and are interested in.”

Congratulations on all of your accomplishments, Erin!
