Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and the Office of Education today officially launched the PhillyGoes2College Initiative (PG2C).
PG2C is an important part of Mayor Nutter’s efforts and programs to help educate city residents and help them pursue degrees and certifications in higher and continuing education.
Peirce College is proud to have played a part in helping to get this important initiative off the ground by installing computer equipment and technology for administrative staff last week in the PhillyGoes2College’s offices in City Hall. Peirce’s CIO, Chris Duffy, oversaw the installation and made sure everything was up and running for this week’s launch. The primary goal of the office center staff is to help students and parents navigate the college application process. A full press release that details our role is included below.

“The overall purpose of the PhillyGoes2College Initiative is to motivate more youth, adults and current college students in Philadelphia to pursue and complete college.
Moreover, by involving all segments of the community in this initiative, Philadelphians attending or planning to attend college in the region, will realize that Philadelphia is the ideal city to earn a college degree and to live in while pursuing a rewarding career.”

Philadelphia, February 23, 2010 – Peirce College joined Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and other City government leaders at a ribbon cutting ceremony today for the official opening of the PhillyGoes2College (PC2C) Office located in City Hall.
Peirce College is an active participant in Mayor Nutter’s new citywide initiative to increase the number of Philadelphians going to college. Peirce’s support includes the installation last week of computer equipment and technology for administrative staff in the PhillyGoes2College office. The primary goal of the office center staff is to help students of all ages navigate the college application process.
At the ceremony, the Mayor recognized Peirce President and Chief Executive Officer James J. Mergiotti and thanked Peirce College for their support and how, “the donation and installation of the PC equipment will assist the PG2C team with helping Philadelphians to learn how to earn their college degree,” Mayor Nutter said. “We thank Peirce for their quick response to the installation, which was completed in less than three days.”
“We are pleased to be a part of this very important program,” said Christopher Duffy, Peirce Chief Information Officer. “Peirce IT staff worked in close cooperation with the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Technology to ensure we fully met their technology requirements and that the support services were fully operational for today’s launch.”
Peirce’s partnership with the City of Philadelphia on education issues grew out of a meeting last October between Mayor Nutter, Dr. Lori Shorr, Chief Education Officer for the City of Philadelphia, President Mergiotti and Rita J. Toliver-Roberts, Ed.D., Peirce Dean of Students.
“When we learned of the Mayor’s PhillyGoes2College Initiative, we asked how we could help,” Mergiotti said. “We applaud the mayor and Dr. Shorr for this initiative, which helps to level the playing field for aspiring students, who may need additional support in preparing to attend college. Eliminating obstacles for potential college students in the application process is critical and is an area where Peirce College places a significant amount of emphasis.”
