Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to deliver keynote address at 2010 commencement ceremony
I am pleased to announce that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Commencement ceremony on Monday June 14th. The full press release detailing the announcement is below.
We’re honored to have Mayor Nutter as a speaker, particularly because he shares Peirce’s vision for educating Philadelphians and helping them gain access to higher and continuing education.
More details about commencement will follow in the coming weeks.
Philadelphia, February 15, 2010 – Peirce College announces that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will deliver the keynote address at the College’s 145th Commencement ceremony on Monday, June 14, 2010 at The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.
“We are delighted that Mayor Nutter has agreed to be this year’s Commencement speaker,” said James J. Mergiotti, Peirce College president and chief executive officer.
“This is important for Peirce College as we implement initiatives–developed during our aggressive strategic planning process–to increase the participation of our institution with the City of Philadelphia and the greater Philadelphia area.”
This is Mergiotti’s first graduation ceremony as president of Peirce. He took over the presidency on July 1, 2009. “We are particularly pleased to partner with and support Mayor Nutter in his education initiatives for Philadelphia,” Mergiotti said. “The Mayor’s vision to create a more educated city, in which all citizens have the opportunity to reach their potential, fits precisely with our plan to play a more active role in helping the City achieve that goal. Patricia A. Rucker, Ed.D., Senior Vice President, Academic Advancement and Provost at Peirce, who will be the presiding officer at Commencement, and all of Peirce’s faculty and staff, are excited about what our College can contribute to the City’s education goals.”
Mergiotti pointed to the importance of working together to achieve a common goal. “I have maintained, since taking over the presidency at Peirce, that a highly participative community of stakeholders at the College will be the foundation for our continued success,” he said. “As Dr. Lori Shorr, Chief Education Officer for the City of Philadelphia has said, collaboration is key to progress in improving educational outcomes.”
Although Peirce teaches students from 43 of the 50 states in the Union, almost 93 percent of its students are from the Delaware Valley, the large majority of who live and work in Philadelphia. “We have a personal stake in improving the educational opportunities of all Philadelphians,” Mergiotti said. “Plus, our curriculum is very practical—it is focused on workforce development. The majority of our students are working adults. Many are first-generation students and many are looking for new careers or career transitions or career advancement. The other real distinction about Peirce is the majority of our students tend to stay here in the Philadelphia region after graduation. We are not exporting talent from Peirce and the region to other state economies.”
