Sandra Turner-Barnes, award-winning author and Peirce alumna

The Peirce College Black History Month Committee is giving you a great opportunity to be inspired by the achievements of African-American leaders, artists, and authors. It’s hosting an event that will feature a reading from our very own Sandra Turner-Barnes, an award-winning author and Peirce alumna.

Widely known as the “Cadillac Lady” for the title of a song she wrote and performed early in her career, Sandra is recognized for her skills as a fiction writer, performance poet, and vocal stylist. To date, she has published three poetry collections, two children’s books, and is the recipient of multiple awards, among them the EBONY magazine National Literary Award for Short Fiction and the 1993 George Washington Carver Humanitarian Award. She has also written and co-written many songs and released a poetry and jazz CD.

Beyond her artistic career, Sandra shares her talents as an art administrator and teacher. She is currently the Executive Director of the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission, an adjunct professor in the Rutgers University Roberto Clemente Humanities course, and a member of the Board of Directors for the New Jersey State Black Cultural and Heritage Initiative.

The program will also include a panel discussion featuring Peirce student and alumni leaders, as well as a poetry reading by talented writer and Peirce student Carol Burns, who will present an excerpt from her anthology of poems.
